Company History

Boston Financial has been serving clients as a leading real estate investment manager for 40 years. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, we manage $10.2 billion in real estate investments for a large and diversified national client base that includes 125 institutional clients and 16,000 individual investors.

Boston Financial was organized in 1969 as a private partnership established to connect individual investors to affordable housing real estate investments. From 1969 through 1986, Boston Financial raised approximately $700 million from 5,800 individuals and invested in approximately 62,000 apartment units nationwide. The Tax Reform Act of 1986 eliminated most ways for individuals and corporations to reduce their tax burdens but enacted the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program (LIHTC) as an incentive for the development and preservation of privately-owned affordable rental housing.

Beginning in 1986, Boston Financial focused on the LIHTC program and was the first company to introduce a public tax credit fund on Wall Street and the first for-profit firm to introduce an institutional tax credit fund. With a nationwide LIHTC portfolio of 186,000 units, we have consistently placed among the largest apartment owners in the National Multi-Housing Council’s annual survey.

We have had various ownership structures throughout our 40-year history from a private partnership to a wholly-owned subsidiary of a large, publicly-traded corporation, but our commitment to the affordable housing industry has never faltered.

Boston Financial was recently acquired from MuniMae in July 2009 by a partnership formed between JEN Partners and Real Estate Capital Partners.
